The first DVLA sealed bids auction came to a close Monday and the results are in.
This was the DVLA's first move away from the traditional cherished number plate auction format and as such a barmoter for the number plate market in these times of credit crunch too
The results were mixed - not a runaway success but not a complete flop either - we think the DVLA will experiment further with this an other auction formats - in addition to their DVLA buy online facility for private number plates which is now also running.
The good
69% lots sold
£840,320 total sales
£51,250 highest priced lot
The bad
31% lots unsold
low prices achieved- average £816 compared to DVLA average of £3500
Poor advertising & low uptake.
The conlusion
Although the first DVLA sealed bids auction had a degree of success - selling some 69% of the lots - it's still unsure as to the long term prospects of this new DVLA auction format.
The DVLA usually enjoy average sales of £3500 per lot at DVLA auction but the DVLA sealed bids auction averaged only £816 - we feel this is due largely to the poor marketing effort on behalf of the DVLA.
